5 Ways Telecom BSS Will Be Reimagined in 2022

The new year is a time for resolutions — and predictions. Thus, we are opening 2022 with several predictions about what we believe is coming in the telecom industry and BSS. I look forward to reviewing this list with you in 12 months to see how strong the powers of my crystal ball are. After all, there was a 5G crystal ball on our telecom operator’s holiday wish list.

#1 – Cloud momentum accelerates, enables reinvention of revenue models and BSS

Telecom operators will increasingly move to the public, private or hybrid clouds. With adaptability at the heart of success and to seize opportunities in 2022, cloudification will deliver the needed ease and agility for configuring BSS in real-time. This can be accelerated without heavy customizations or heavy lifting by the operators’ IT teams with vendors with the right foundation and expertise. Further, cloud will provide operators the capability to leverage BSS to develop 5G use-cases and future emerging services.

#2 – Full digital transformation — buried by the sandbox

Introducing new offerings, increasing service velocity, and going to market quickly and cost-effectively are critical for success on the new competitive playing field. That makes the days of traditional and full digital transformation over. Instead, an essential cloud tool, the sandbox, with its test-fast, fail-fast approach, will shorten product cycle times and empower operators to reinvent their functionality and service capabilities with dramatic cost and time savings. Operators will increasingly explore, experiment, learn, launch and re-launch rapidly in 2022.

# 3 – Smart automation becomes the norm, delivers competitive edge

Automation will enable operators to realize cloud technology’s ROI more fully. Cloud-native, services-based architecture with a CI/CD approach will change the way services are managed and rolled out. It will provide installation and launch in weeks instead of months and give operators access to non-traditional markets and revenue streams. Further, an automated testing framework will provide operators with complete and real-time visibility into their projects, which will foster collaboration with vendor partners.

#4 – MVNOs and digital brands will be market catalysts

Approximately 40% of an operator’s Opex is spent attracting new customers. MVNOs and digital brands, on the other hand, can narrow their focus and target specific customer segments to deliver innovative and relevant offers quickly to gain new customers, and MNOs have the opportunity to embrace the acquisition approach with change in expectations of how BSS platforms are delivered. Requirements will be for greater flexibility and agility, faster time to launch and benefit, accelerated business velocity, and elevated customer experience.

“The success of 5G will be predicated on expansion to new market segments and creating a better customer experience. Thus, MVNO/Es have a business necessity to expand into new markets cost effectively. The Optiva MVNx Fast Track program can accelerate time to market and help CSPs personalise their engagements with enterprises and consumers in real-time, which lowers costs and significantly improves revenue opportunities,” said John Abraham, Principal Analyst, Analysys Mason.

#5 – Telecom will go beyond — traditional revenue and 5G

Operators will embrace non-traditional market segments, partners, and ecosystems in 2022. To leverage 5G and IoT use cases and monetize new business and commercial revenue streams, they will break with traditional business models. Although 5G will continue to play a role, because it will fail to fully deliver on its promises, the research and conversations about 6G will grow.
